The cartouche states that Cyriacus Blodner, an imperial engineer-major, drew this plan on the battlefield itself: the action of 5 August 1716 between Peterwardein and Carlowitz, Prince Eugene of Savoy against the Grand Vizier. Peterwardein, Kamenitz, Carlowitz, Ratzenstatt and Croaten-Dorff are lettered along the Danube, with two ship bridges crossing to the Novi Sad bank and the roads to Futack and Segedin marked. The German account at upper left counts 30,000 Turkish dead, the abandoned camp, war chancery, camels and horsetail standards, and the Te Deum sung on 7 August.
About this place
A Habsburg star fortress on the right bank of the Danube, built between 1692 and 1780 on a site fortified since antiquity: the Romans held Cusum here, a medieval fortress followed, and Cistercian monks kept a monastery on the hill in the 13th century. Beneath its walls Prince Eugene of Savoy defeated a far larger Ottoman army on 5 August 1716. Nicknamed the Gibraltar on the Danube, the fortress conceals some 16 kilometres of underground counter-mine galleries dug in 1764-1776. On its clock tower the hands are reversed, the long hand showing the hours so that fishermen on the Danube could read the time from a distance. The fortress still stands over the river and houses the City Museum of Novi Sad.

Brief description of the battle and explanation of the letters. The Turks crossed the Sava with 200,000 men and reoccupied the old Caprara entrenchment at Peterwardein, held by the Imperial infantry; the inner work is marked A, the outer B, their approaches and batteries C, on 2, 3 and 4 August. Prince Eugene, having drawn in the corps under Prince Alexander of Wurttemberg from Szeged, resolved to attack, which followed on the 5th. The account then walks the letters D to N across the field: the Imperial left-wing cavalry forming on the meadows at daybreak, the janissaries attacked in flank by the gallows, a repulse retrieved by the right-wing cavalry, the enemy driven from the entrenchment and put to flight, abandoning the whole camp, baggage, guns, ammunition and field chancery, many thousand buffalo and camels, standards and horsetails, with 30,000 dead including the Grand Vizier himself, against 3,000 to 4,000 on the Imperial side. The Turks retired on Belgrade; on 6 August the army recrossed the Danube, and on the 7th a solemn Te Deum was sung.
