A crowd queueing along the bank and up the gangway onto the small steamer at the landing stage, in overcoats and hats in winter light. The fortress and a steel truss bridge stand across the water, so the river bridges were still up when the picture was taken.
About this place
The Novi Sad bank of the Danube, the embankment walk between the bridges. It is where the town meets its river: steamers tied up along it, the ferry and later the pontoon crossing landed on it, and it is the vantage point for most photographs looking across to the Petrovaradin cliff. Today the embankment carries more than one name along its length, Beogradski kej and Kej zrtava racije among them, and this entry holds the general name for the whole walk.
