The Battle at Peterwaradein, 1716, by J. C. Fleischmann of Nuremberg
An ornate cartouche of flags, weapons and allegorical figures frames a battle plan with troop positions fanned out before Peterwaradein, Belgrado, Salankemen, Carlowitz and Semlyn all named along the river. A scroll below reads Schlacht bey Peterwaradein, and the engraver signs it A. C. Fleischmann fec. Norinbergae. A small oval library stamp marks the upper left corner.

About this place
The hill above Petrovaradin on the Fruska Gora side of the Danube, and the ground on which the Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716. The Ottoman army under the Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha camped here to besiege the fortress, and the hill carries his title: Vezirac is the Vizier's place. Prince Eugene of Savoy crossed from the fortress and broke the Ottoman line in a single morning. The Grand Vizier was mortally wounded in the fighting and died soon after, and the defeat ended the Ottoman advance on the middle Danube. The Peace Monument stands on the hill today.
