The Danube at Peterwardein on a manuscript map
A detail of a hand drawn and hand coloured map, ink and wash on laid paper. The Danube winds across it as a broad green band, its channels and islands hatched with reed and marsh symbols, braiding around a wooded island before narrowing at a bend. On the high right bank a fortified place is drawn in red and ochre as a close cluster of small blocks along a ridge, labelled in large engraved capitals. Downstream of it the river bends south past a small settlement labelled at the water's edge. On the opposite bank three separate labels mark a settlement, a hospital and a magazine, each with its own small block symbol, and a red flag symbol stands beside another place name further downstream. To the left, dotted lines mark routes across the plain, a hatched linear earthwork runs from the edge of the sheet with its own caption, and a smaller settlement is marked below it. A bar scale with a caption in a cursive hand runs across the lower part of the sheet, and a red hatched rectangle stands beside a further place name.
