Siege Map of Petrovaradin, Ottoman Trenches and Artillery Batteries
A detailed map lays out the fortress of Peterwardein under siege, with Ottoman tent camps, trenches, artillery batteries and approach lines marked across the surrounding countryside and along the Danube. A French-language key at upper right identifies the fortress, the town, the entrenched Christian camp, the Ottoman approaches and batteries, and the baggage park.

About this place
The hill above Petrovaradin on the Fruska Gora side of the Danube, and the ground on which the Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716. The Ottoman army under the Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha camped here to besiege the fortress, and the hill carries his title: Vezirac is the Vizier's place. Prince Eugene of Savoy crossed from the fortress and broke the Ottoman line in a single morning. The Grand Vizier was mortally wounded in the fighting and died soon after, and the defeat ended the Ottoman advance on the middle Danube. The Peace Monument stands on the hill today.
