1694Vezirac
Plan of the Imperial Camp at Petrovaradin, the 1694 Ottoman Siege
A hand-colored map lays out the Imperial army's fortified camp and the fortress of Peterwardein on a bend of the Danube, with the Ottoman army's positions, ships and camps marked across the river and surrounding land, and two keyed legends listing the numbered positions. The title states that an Ottoman army of 80,000 men approached and besieged the position in the year 1694, bombarding the fortress before withdrawing on 2 October without success.
About this place
The hill above Petrovaradin on the Fruska Gora side of the Danube, and the ground on which the Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716. The Ottoman army under the Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha camped here to besiege the fortress, and the hill carries his title: Vezirac is the Vizier's place. Prince Eugene of Savoy crossed from the fortress and broke the Ottoman line in a single morning. The Grand Vizier was mortally wounded in the fighting and died soon after, and the defeat ended the Ottoman advance on the middle Danube. The Peace Monument stands on the hill today.
