Nine-kreuzer stamp of the Austrian Empire, 1850
The 9 kreuzer of the first Austrian stamps, on sale across the empire from 1 June 1850, the lands of the Hungarian Crown included. The imperial double-headed eagle stands under a crown, with KK POST-STEMPEL, imperial-royal postage stamp, across the top. The sheets were imperforate, so each stamp was cut off with scissors. Nine kreuzer was the highest of the three letter rates, for the longest distances. Neusatz had no post office of its own until 1853 or 1854, and its mail went through the office at Peterwardein. The stamps stayed valid until the end of 1858, two months into the new decimal currency.
