The Battle before Peterwaradyn, 1716, by Adolf van der Laan
An etching and engraving of the fighting before Petrovaradin on 5 August 1716, made in the Netherlands in the year of the battle. In the foreground imperial officers and cavalry ride into a melee around a village church, with the dead and a fallen horse across the ground and a robed Ottoman figure at the right edge. Behind them both armies stand in long lines across the plain, the Ottoman tents and covered wagons beyond, and a range of hills closes the horizon. Adolf van der Laan signed the plate as both its designer and its engraver.

About this place
The hill above Petrovaradin on the Fruska Gora side of the Danube, and the ground on which the Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716. The Ottoman army under the Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha camped here to besiege the fortress, and the hill carries his title: Vezirac is the Vizier's place. Prince Eugene of Savoy crossed from the fortress and broke the Ottoman line in a single morning. The Grand Vizier was mortally wounded in the fighting and died soon after, and the defeat ended the Ottoman advance on the middle Danube. The Peace Monument stands on the hill today.
