Map of the Victorious Battle Near Petrovaradin, 5 August 1716
A hand-colored campaign map traces the fortress of Peterwardein, the Danube's marshy banks and rows of encamped troops and artillery positions across the surrounding countryside. The title cartouche describes this as a true depiction of the battle that turned out victorious for the Imperial arms near Peterwardein on 5 August 1716. A circular library stamp appears at lower right.
About this place
The hill above Petrovaradin on the Fruska Gora side of the Danube, and the ground on which the Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716. The Ottoman army under the Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha camped here to besiege the fortress, and the hill carries his title: Vezirac is the Vizier's place. Prince Eugene of Savoy crossed from the fortress and broke the Ottoman line in a single morning. The Grand Vizier was mortally wounded in the fighting and died soon after, and the defeat ended the Ottoman advance on the middle Danube. The Peace Monument stands on the hill today.
