An engraving shows the fortress of Peterwardein besieged along the Danube, with the Imperial army's baggage train and troop formations marked across the surrounding fields, and a small vignette of onlookers in the corner. The title describes Peter Waradin as besieged this year by the Imperial army against the Turks, without stating the year in the visible portion of the title.
About this place
The hill above Petrovaradin on the Fruska Gora side of the Danube, and the ground on which the Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716. The Ottoman army under the Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha camped here to besiege the fortress, and the hill carries his title: Vezirac is the Vizier's place. Prince Eugene of Savoy crossed from the fortress and broke the Ottoman line in a single morning. The Grand Vizier was mortally wounded in the fighting and died soon after, and the defeat ended the Ottoman advance on the middle Danube. The Peace Monument stands on the hill today.
