The Glorious Victory at Peterwardein, 5 August 1716, by Gottfried Rogg
An engraved battle scene: cavalry charging with sabres and pistols around a plumed commander, a canopied tent to the right sheltering a seated figure, smoke and fallen men in the foreground. The banner above reads, in German, of the Imperial army's victory over the Turks at Peterwardein on 5 August 1716.
Gottfried Rogg
About this place
The hill above Petrovaradin on the Fruska Gora side of the Danube, and the ground on which the Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716. The Ottoman army under the Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha camped here to besiege the fortress, and the hill carries his title: Vezirac is the Vizier's place. Prince Eugene of Savoy crossed from the fortress and broke the Ottoman line in a single morning. The Grand Vizier was mortally wounded in the fighting and died soon after, and the defeat ended the Ottoman advance on the middle Danube. The Peace Monument stands on the hill today.
