The Battle of Petrovaradin, 1716, in a German commemorative engraving
A German-captioned engraving titled The Great Turkish Defeat at Peterwardein shows massed cavalry fighting through billowing smoke, with an Ottoman camp of tents visible behind, and an inset map at top left. The print commemorates Prince Eugene of Savoy's victory over the Ottoman army at Petrovaradin on 5 August 1716.
About this place
The hill above Petrovaradin on the Fruska Gora side of the Danube, and the ground on which the Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716. The Ottoman army under the Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha camped here to besiege the fortress, and the hill carries his title: Vezirac is the Vizier's place. Prince Eugene of Savoy crossed from the fortress and broke the Ottoman line in a single morning. The Grand Vizier was mortally wounded in the fighting and died soon after, and the defeat ended the Ottoman advance on the middle Danube. The Peace Monument stands on the hill today.
