Alba mirror shop
1950–1959Alba
An exhibition stand rather than a shop, roped off with stanchions and hung with mirrors of every size. The lettering names the firm as the Alba mirror works of Železnička Street and repeats the trade in German alongside the Serbian, which suits a trade fair pitched at visitors from outside the country.
About this place
Alba was a mirror works in Novi Sad, at Železnička ulica 53. The photograph shows its display: a deep window bay hung with paper garlands, framed and bevelled mirrors of every shape ranged on stands and shelves, and a lit vitrine in the middle. The firm's name is written in script across the glass beside the words fabrika ogledala in Cyrillic, and the board along the front of the stand repeats the address and the trade in Serbian and in German, fabrika ogledala and Spiegelfabrik. Nothing about the company has been traced beyond what the photograph itself carries; the double-script, two-language signage is the kind used in Novi Sad between the wars.
