The greeting across the card is in Serbian Latin alone, with no second language, which is the post-war pattern, and the fair's device sits in a roundel beside it, an S and an N interlaced above a wing. Four inset views are mounted on the black card: a hall entrance hung with flags and banners behind a standing figure on a plinth, exhibition stands under a banner announcing the show with a combine harvester drawn up in front, a line of tractors and self-propelled machines out on the apron, and the long pavilion front with a crowd at its arcade. The machinery is what the May agricultural show was for.
About this place
The Novi Sad Fair is the city's exhibition ground and the company that runs it, occupying a large walled site on Hajduk Veljkova Street in the western district of Sajmište. It grew out of the markets and craft shows held at Futog and Novi Sad in the nineteenth century, and the first agricultural exhibition was staged in August 1923; the event was opened to foreign exhibitors from 1930. Exhibitions were first held on an older fairground in Šumadijska Street in the inner city, and moved in 1940 to the present site, which gave the surrounding district its name, Sajmište meaning fairground. The fair joined the international federation of trade fairs in 1958, and its May agricultural show remains one of the largest in southeastern Europe.
