The memorial on the quay, with the fortress beyond
A colour view along a laid out riverside terrace on a still, hazy morning. A dark bronze group of standing figures rises on a low square plinth at the centre, set on a paved apron behind a stepped wall of rough stone, with planted beds of grass and shrubs around it. In front, a broad sweep of pinkish paving curves away to the left past a lawn edged with low box, and a bright flowerbed of red cannas and mixed bedding fills the right foreground with a yellow slatted bench beyond it. Behind the memorial the Danube lies flat and pale, with moored craft along the far bank, and the wooded bluff of Petrovaradin rises beyond, its long barrack ranges and the clock tower standing along the skyline in the haze.
About this place
The Novi Sad bank of the Danube, the embankment walk between the bridges. It is where the town meets its river: steamers tied up along it, the ferry and later the pontoon crossing landed on it, and it is the vantage point for most photographs looking across to the Petrovaradin cliff. Today the embankment carries more than one name along its length, Beogradski kej and Kej zrtava racije among them, and this entry holds the general name for the whole walk.
