Satelit is a district on the western edge of Novi Sad, bounded by the Futog road to the south and the boulevards of Knez Miloš, Slobodan Jovanović and Jovan Dučić on its other sides. The name means what it says: when the settlement went up it was a companion orbiting the city rather than part of it. Houses stood in the eastern part by 1952, and the main building began in the middle of the 1950s; the central section, Mali Satelit or Tožinovac, is named after Todor Jovanović Toza, the mayor who started its construction in 1956 and 1957. It began as a working class settlement of modest single storey houses and has since filled with blocks of flats, shops, schools and a market.
