A wide panorama of Novi Sad's rooftops from a high vantage point, at least five church spires and towers breaking the skyline including one tall Gothic spire near the centre, with a hill on the horizon at the right. Captioned 'Novi Sad. Panorama', though a correspondent has written the city's Hungarian name, 'Ujvidek', by hand at the top right corner.
About this place
The Roman Catholic church of Saint Roch stands at Futoška 7, on the old road west out of Novi Sad toward Futog. An inscription on its street front dates the present building to 1801; it took the place of an 18th-century church on the same ground, pulled down when the Futog road was laid out. It served first as a cemetery chapel, was enlarged in 1841 as a hospital chapel, and has been an independent parish church since 1927. Damage from the fighting of 1849 was repaired to plans by Teodor Šeft. The building marks the passage from Baroque to Classicism; its side windows hold two stained glass panels of 1905 showing Christ and Saint George, and its organ was built in 1879 by Ádám Keilbach, a local organ builder. The parish calls it the oldest Catholic church in Novi Sad. Its square tower with a low pyramidal cap stands at the left of this archive's panorama of 1931.
