A streamlined railcar with a rounded white and black nose stands on the tracks before the Novi Sad station building, its bilingual Cyrillic and Latin sign reading Novi Sad above the platform. A crowd gathers to view it, including a uniformed official in a white coat. The donor identifies the railcar as a Ganz-built Arpad-series motor coach.
About this place
The first station in Novi Sad, built in 1882 on the site of today's Liman market. The first train reached the city on 5 March 1883 from Subotica, and the line onward to Zemun opened that December. When the railway was moved north to make room for the growing city the station was demolished, and only its former post office building survives. Postcards of it are captioned Vasutallomas in Hungarian and Eisenbahnstation in German.
On the card
НОВИ САД NOVI SAD
The station's own name across the front of the building, in Serbian Cyrillic and then in Latin script, in the modernist sans of the new station.
