A bus at the Satelit stop
A single deck city bus stands at a stop on a wide road, passengers seated at the windows and one boarding at the centre door while another waits on the kerb. VOLVO reads across the front panel and the maker's roundel is carried on the flank. The shelter beside it is the striking thing: a canopy of folded triangular planes cantilevered from a single column, with a glazed kiosk standing under one end and a tall lamp standard rising behind. Across the road a low modernist block faced in dark brick stands back behind a verge, its upper floor carried on piers and a glazed stair bay projecting at one end, with a second shelter and a bicycle further along. The foreground is raw sand and rubble with a kerb laid and no pavement behind it, and a line of young trees closes the view on the left.
About this place
Satelit is a district on the western edge of Novi Sad, bounded by the Futog road to the south and the boulevards of Knez Miloš, Slobodan Jovanović and Jovan Dučić on its other sides. The name means what it says: when the settlement went up it was a companion orbiting the city rather than part of it. Houses stood in the eastern part by 1952, and the main building began in the middle of the 1950s; the central section, Mali Satelit or Tožinovac, is named after Todor Jovanović Toza, the mayor who started its construction in 1956 and 1957. It began as a working class settlement of modest single storey houses and has since filled with blocks of flats, shops, schools and a market.
