1970sNORK Department Store
The NORK department store on the corner
The NORK department store, built of faceted concrete piers and ribbon glazing, carries its name in tall Cyrillic letters, НОРК, across its upper front and again in Latin, NORK, at the right-hand end, with a crowd along its ground floor shopfronts. A curtain walled office slab stands behind it to the left and a lower curved modernist block carries a single letter sign. A city bus and a saloon car cross the foreground and two women walk over a zebra crossing.
About this place
NORK, short for Novosadska robna kuća, the Novi Sad Department Store, stands at Bulevar Mihajla Pupina 2. The trading company Zvezda began building it in 1971 to the design of the architect Milan Matović, whose scheme had won first place in a competition; it was finished on 28 June 1972 and opened on 30 June. Dragiša Brašovan had shaped part of the side facade of his post office next door to receive it, and together they rounded off one of the town's oldest blocks. On 5,700 square metres, over a basement, ground floor and three upper floors, it sold everything from furniture and clothing to electrical goods and sports equipment. Until the Merkator centre was built in 2007 it was the second largest store in the city, after the Bazar of Stoteks. Today the site trades as New Nork. This archive's photograph of the 1970s shows НОРК in Cyrillic across the front and NORK in Latin at the right-hand end.
