Nothing is printed on the card. The walks are laid in irregular stone flags with slatted timber benches on cast frames set along them, and a low run of iron hoop edging rings the water in place of a railing. Willows lean out over the planted island, its shore built up in rockwork, a raft is moored out near the jet, and the lamp standards are plain steel poles with a single bracket.
About this place
The city's central park was laid out in 1895 on a swampy former branch of the Danube known as the Liman, until then a reedbed of willows, mosquitoes and frogs. Its small lake keeps an island named Erzsébet in honour of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, assassinated in 1898. The fountain sculpture of a nymph, the Girl with the Horn of Plenty by Đorđe Jovanović, was installed in 1912, and later decades added monuments to the poets Đura Jakšić (1982) and Miroslav Antić (1992). Covering four hectares with some 760 trees, the park is protected as a Monument of Nature.
