The old Hungarian gymnasium at the corner
A long two storey block of the later nineteenth century turns a street corner, its upper windows framed by pilasters and moulded heads under a running cornice. Along the ground floor a deep awning shelters a shopfront lettered Kvalitet in Cyrillic and Latin by turns, a hoarding at the corner carries an advertisement, and a lattice mast before the shop holds two signs showing a walking figure. Women in summer dresses with full skirts stand on the pavement, a young couple pose by the corner and a car waits at the kerb further along, under a small tree. The building is the old Hungarian grammar school, put up by the town in 1876 for its Hungarian Catholic gymnasium; the school later moved to a new building in Futoška street, and the house went on to hold a court and later the Vojvodina Museum until it was pulled down to cut the boulevard through the old town.
