25 May 1945Tram Depot
The first tram in the liberated city
Some fifty men, most in peaked caps and working overalls, are massed in front of a tramcar with a second car standing at the right. A flag with a star hangs in the tram's windscreen, men stand on the fenders and lean out from the platform, and the shed roof runs away above them.
About this place
The depot of the Novi Sad electric tramway housed the cars of a line powered by the town's first power station, which began supplying current in 1910. The line opened on 30 September 1911, run at first by a Budapest tramway company with motor cars built by Ganz, the first of which had arrived on 21 August, and this archive holds a photograph of the cars drawn up at the new depot that September. The bombing of 1944 badly damaged the power station and stopped the trams. They ran again from 25 May 1945, and in 1958 buses replaced them. The archive's photograph from the 1950s shows a car outside the long, low depot shed in those last years.
