Siege Map of Petrovaradin Under Ottoman Attack, French Annotations
A hand-drawn map, with a small orientation map above it, lays out the fortress of Peterwardein and the surrounding Ottoman siege lines, camps and artillery positions along the Danube. A French-language key at right identifies the fort, the town, the entrenched camp and other features. The title describes this as a siege of Peterwardein by the Turks.
About this place
The hill above Petrovaradin on the Fruska Gora side of the Danube, and the ground on which the Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716. The Ottoman army under the Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha camped here to besiege the fortress, and the hill carries his title: Vezirac is the Vizier's place. Prince Eugene of Savoy crossed from the fortress and broke the Ottoman line in a single morning. The Grand Vizier was mortally wounded in the fighting and died soon after, and the defeat ended the Ottoman advance on the middle Danube. The Peace Monument stands on the hill today.
