A marble memorial tablet set in a red marble surround, a carved coat of arms with supporters in a panel above the lettering and a gilt cross over it. The inscription records three of the Karátsonyi family with their dates: Count Guido, his wife Maria born Marczibányi, and their daughter Quidobaldina, who died within months of her mother. The tablet is signed at the lower right by the Gerenday firm of monumental masons.
About this place
The Marcibányi-Karácsonyi castle stands in the Kamenica park at Sremska Kamenica, on the right bank of the Danube across from Novi Sad. It was built in stages between 1797 and 1811 for the noble Marcibányi de Puho family, and was rebuilt and enlarged between 1834 and 1836 after the Karácsonyi family came into the estate. The building is classicist, with Doric columns, carved decoration and ornamental ironwork, and it is unusual among castles of its kind because its plan is not symmetrical. Castle and park together are protected as a spatial cultural and historical ensemble of great significance, and the building now holds a faculty of European legal and political studies, the Nikola Mirkov documentation centre and offices of the national hydrometeorological service. The count who enlarged it, Guido Karacsonyi of Karacsonyfalva and Beodra (1817-1885), came of a Transylvanian Armenian family and was a friend of Franz Liszt, who gave a concert in the Karacsonyi palace in Buda in 1873. Guido had married Anna Maria Marczibanyi of Pucho and Csoka in 1851, which is how the two family names came to stand together on this house; the memorial tablet to them both is still on the building.
