Franz Liszt at the Keyboard With Count Guidó Karátsonyi, the 1873 Jubilee Group
Ten men arranged for a group photograph in a studio. Seated second from the left at a small keyboard instrument, hands on the keys, is Franz Liszt: the long white hair swept back behind the ears and the plain black cassock he wore from 1865 are both unmistakable. Beside him another sitter wears a cassock and a pectoral cross. The rest stand and sit around the instrument in frock coats, one leaning on its case, one at the front with his legs crossed. The photograph is here through Count Guido Karátsonyi, who owned the Kamenica estate and was Liszt's friend; Liszt gave a concert in the family's Buda palace in 1873. The group was photographed for Liszt's jubilee of 1873, which marked fifty years of his artistic career, and among the ten men is Count Guidó Karátsonyi of Karácsonyfalva and Beodra, 1817 to 1885, the Hungarian-Armenian magnate who was Liszt's friend and patron. Karátsonyi hosted a charity concert by Liszt at his Buda palace and paid for the composer's journey through Transylvania and the Romanian principalities. He was 56 in the year of the jubilee. Which of the ten figures he is has not been determined, so no seat is claimed for him here.
