One-gulden state note, Vienna, 1866
A one-gulden Staatsnote of the imperial state treasury, dated Vienna, 7 July 1866, four days after the Austrian defeat by Prussia at Königgrätz. The state itself stood behind it through its central treasury, and its text makes it good at every state office for all payments that the law does not require in coin. A seated woman and Mercury with his staff frame the text below, the double-headed eagle crowns it, and a panel records that the issue of state notes was placed under a commission controlling the state debt.
