A Pavilion in the Promenade Park, Strollers on the Gravel Path
A hand-tinted postcard shows a hip-roofed pavilion at the edge of the city's promenade park, its ground floor let to a business whose sign is mostly hidden behind a tree. Two men in suits and hats stroll along a gravel path between curved flowerbeds, past iron benches, while a group of women in long dresses gathers near the pavilion's far corner.
About this place
The city's central park was laid out in 1895 on a swampy former branch of the Danube known as the Liman, until then a reedbed of willows, mosquitoes and frogs. Its small lake keeps an island named Erzsébet in honour of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, assassinated in 1898. The fountain sculpture of a nymph, the Girl with the Horn of Plenty by Đorđe Jovanović, was installed in 1912, and later decades added monuments to the poets Đura Jakšić (1982) and Miroslav Antić (1992). Covering four hectares with some 760 trees, the park is protected as a Monument of Nature.
