The promenade kiosk confectionery, Novi Sad
A photographic postcard shows an ornately carved wooden kiosk in the promenade park, its awning sheltering rows of tables set with white cloths. A waiter in a long apron stands among seated patrons while a caption identifies the building as a confectionery. The word Ujvidek is worked into the design of the bench in the foreground.

About this place
The city's central park was laid out in 1895 on a swampy former branch of the Danube known as the Liman, until then a reedbed of willows, mosquitoes and frogs. Its small lake keeps an island named Erzsébet in honour of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, assassinated in 1898. The fountain sculpture of a nymph, the Girl with the Horn of Plenty by Đorđe Jovanović, was installed in 1912, and later decades added monuments to the poets Đura Jakšić (1982) and Miroslav Antić (1992). Covering four hectares with some 760 trees, the park is protected as a Monument of Nature.
