The plan of the battle of 5 August 1716 from the first volume of Jean du Mont's Dutch history of Prince Eugene's battles, published in The Hague in 1729, still bound in the book. The fortress of Petrovaradin, its town, citadel and hornwork stand over the Danube, with the Ottoman camp, the Grand Vizier's tent and the lines of both armies spread over the hills towards Carlowitz. Two ship bridges cross to the far bank, where Ratzen-Stadt, the future Novi Sad, lies behind its entrenchment beside the imperial headquarters, and Kamenietz, today Sremska Kamenica, is marked by its houses and an old fort. A key from A to R follows the fighting from the Ottoman approaches on 3 and 4 August to the Te Deum sung on the 7th.
About this place
The hill above Petrovaradin on the Fruska Gora side of the Danube, and the ground on which the Battle of Petrovaradin was fought on 5 August 1716. The Ottoman army under the Grand Vizier Silahdar Damat Ali Pasha camped here to besiege the fortress, and the hill carries his title: Vezirac is the Vizier's place. Prince Eugene of Savoy crossed from the fortress and broke the Ottoman line in a single morning. The Grand Vizier was mortally wounded in the fighting and died soon after, and the defeat ended the Ottoman advance on the middle Danube. The Peace Monument stands on the hill today.
