A pair of rails curves across broken ground between two new blocks of flats, a plank walkway laid over the trench beside them and concrete posts set along the edge. A woman and a child walk along the track toward the camera. Cars are parked on the roadway at the left, bare poplars stand along the far side and a signal post rises beyond the rails.
About this place
Detelinara is a residential district in the western part of Novi Sad, named after the clover that once grew on it. In the 1920s the ground here was open land largely sown with clover, which people cut and sold to the nearby military garrison. Settled after the First World War, the district is split by Kornelija Stankovića street into Stara Detelinara to the south, built up in the 1920s and 1930s on small family plots, and Nova Detelinara to the north, filled with blocks of flats after the Second World War. Its growth followed the Majevica barracks and the neighbouring military aerodrome, which became the largest in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia; about 44,000 people live in the three local communities that cover the area today.
