A wide view along a cobbled road on a flat grey day. On the right a row of tall concrete apartment slabs stands back behind a service road, cars parked nose in along the kerb, a city bus at a stop and a small flatbed truck coming forward. The carriageway ahead narrows to a level crossing with its barriers down and a line of street lamps marching away beyond it. On the left the ground is still open: rough grass, a cinder verge, wooden poles carrying wires, a low hut with a tiled roof beside the track, and a single light railcar standing at the crossing with a row of older carriages drawn up behind a fence further back. Poplars and low trees close the view on that side, and more blocks show faintly through the haze.
About this place
A street running north-west out of the city towards the village of Rumenka, from which it takes its name. It formed part of the boundary between the growing interwar and postwar districts of Detelinara and Banatić, and it crossed the railway corridor on that side of the city at a level crossing. A crossing on the line between the passenger station and the old locomotive depot survived here until December 2021.
