The department store at Detelinara
A long low department store stands on a corner, its upper storey a band of dark vertical boarding under a deep pale fascia and a flat roof, carried forward over a continuous ground floor of plate glass. The name is fixed in individual letters across the boarded face. Beneath the overhang the shop windows run the whole length of both elevations, dressed with goods and hung with blinds, and a sign board stands between two of them. Low white concrete planters filled with flowers and a raised bed of shrubs are set out on the wide paved forecourt, with a bench beside one of them. A single figure in a light shirt walks out from under the canopy. An estate block shows behind the store at the right, a young sapling stands in the paving, and a light coloured saloon car is parked at the kerb in the right foreground.
About this place
Detelinara is a residential district in the western part of Novi Sad, named after the clover that once grew on it. In the 1920s the ground here was open land largely sown with clover, which people cut and sold to the nearby military garrison. Settled after the First World War, the district is split by Kornelija Stankovića street into Stara Detelinara to the south, built up in the 1920s and 1930s on small family plots, and Nova Detelinara to the north, filled with blocks of flats after the Second World War. Its growth followed the Majevica barracks and the neighbouring military aerodrome, which became the largest in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia; about 44,000 people live in the three local communities that cover the area today.
