About this place
Trifkovićev trg is a narrow rectangular square in the old core of Novi Sad, roughly 108 metres long and 17 metres wide, laid out over a filled-in former arm of the Danube and given its present shape in the middle of the 19th century. It has changed name repeatedly: Jarčev trg, then Ulica Dobrog pastira, then Pozorišni trg after the theatre that stood on it, Deakov trg around 1900 for the Hungarian statesman Ferenc Deák, Trg Koste Trifkovića after the First World War, Deakov trg again under the wartime occupation, and Trifkovićev trg since the liberation of 1944. Kosta Trifković, born in Novi Sad in 1843, was a comic playwright and one of the founders of the literary journal Javor; he died at thirty-two. The Građanska dvorana of 1871, designed by Đerđ Molnar, stood in the middle of the square and housed the first theatre in Novi Sad until it was pulled down in 1892 despite public protest.
