The shelves behind the sitter hold no library of matched sets but a working stack, paper-wrapped offprints and pamphlets pushed in on their sides among a few tooled leather volumes, several of them tipped over and slumping. One spine shows a German author's name and title but will not resolve far enough to read. There is no caption, studio blindstamp or annotation on the print, and nothing in it names either the sitter or the room.
About this place
The house at Kisacka 20, the Novi Sad home of the Maric family and of Mileva Maric, the physicist who studied at the Zurich Polytechnic and married Albert Einstein. A memorial plate to the two of them stands a few doors away. The photographs gathered here are of the couple and their family rather than of the building; they are filed to this address because it is the place in Novi Sad that belongs to them.
