An architect's elevation of the semicircular engine shed at the marshalling yard, drawn in ink on linen at a scale of one to fifty. The left half shows the side wall with its three tall segment-headed windows under a plain gable and a roof ventilator; the right half shows the gable end with the wide arched engine doors, the smoke stack rising through the roof and the guy wires that steady it. Dimension lines are pencilled across both.
About this place
The city's freight and marshalling yard, laid out west of the historic centre between today's Detelinara and Novo Naselje, with the semicircular locomotive depot known as the Ložionica at its heart, built around a turntable with radial tracks running into the shed. Archive-referenced research records approval of the marshalling-yard project in 1915, a construction agreement in 1916, expropriation of land from 1918, and a project for the Ložionica with its depots in 1924. An architect's elevation of that shed survives lettered Ложионица у полукругу and dated Novi Sad, April 1924, so the sequence rests on a dated drawing rather than on a secondary account alone. Accounts giving 1911 or 1912 for the depot, and those associating its design with Gustave Eiffel's office, are undocumented. The yard was bombed in the Allied attacks of 1944 and parts of the complex were rebuilt afterwards.
