Futoška Street, Still Unpaved, with Poultry on the Verge
The street is still unmade with poultry on the verge and no motor traffic at all, though the poles for the wires have gone up along the kerb. The card is captioned twice at the head, in Cyrillic and in Latin with no Hungarian, which places it after 1918.
About this place
Futoška street is the old road running west out of Novi Sad toward Futog, the settlement some 7 km away that Hungarian sources call Futak and German ones Alt-Futok. It was once a single long street reaching from the town centre out to the Futog road, and its inner end became Jevrejska street when the boulevard now called Bulevar Mihajla Pupina was cut through; in the 1930s the whole length, Jevrejska included, was renamed for King Peter II. The building at Futoška 17, put up in 1912 as a Hungarian gymnasium, still stands and houses the Mihajlo Pupin electrical engineering school. The Futoška market on the street remains one of the busiest in the city.
