Zarka Zrenjanina Street with the Workers' University going up
A view along a wide new street on a bright summer day. Young plane trees in two rows divide the carriageway from a broad pavement, their trunks still slender and staked, and tall lamp standards with paired heads march away beside them. On the right a long five storey block stands finished behind a grass verge and a clipped hedge, its front a regular grid of windows above a recessed ground floor. Further down the street the concrete frame of a taller building rises unclad, its floor slabs and columns open to the sky and its site still raw. A man and a woman cross the road in the foreground, she in a dark sleeveless dress, he in a white shirt and dark trousers, and other figures are scattered along the pavement and the far kerb.
About this place
The tower at Vojvođanskih brigada 7, near the southern end of Žarka Zrenjanina street, was built for the Radivoj Ćirpanov Workers' University. The institution was founded on 20 November 1952 as the successor of the People's University of 1919, took in the city's cultural information centre in 1968, and is now the Novi Sad Open University. Its tower of a ground floor and thirteen upper floors, designed by the architects Vojislav Midić and Milan Đokić, was completed in 1966; this archive's photograph of 1963 shows its bare concrete frame at the end of the street. A fire that started on the twelfth floor on 6 April 2000 spread quickly and killed a worker of TV Duga. The software company Vega IT bought the building at the end of 2020 for 5.2 million euros and had it reconstructed to a design by Lazar Kuzmanov, and the work was completed on 30 November 2023.
