The Habag Palace Under a Clouded Sky, 1944
The same modernist corner building, three years after an earlier view of it, still carrying its Agraria signage on the tower and shopfronts along the ground floor. A small circular monogram stamp sits at the lower right corner of the print. Pedestrians cluster near the shop entrances on the right. The date, June 1944, falls a few months before Soviet and Partisan forces reached the city that October.
About this place
The Habag palace stands at the start of Vase Stajića street, on the corner of what is now Trg galerija, and was completed in 1931 as the central building of the German community in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. It held the offices of the Kulturbund and of the German agricultural credit cooperative Agraria, and a well known café called Habag occupied the ground floor. Sources disagree about who designed it: Serbian accounts credit the Vršac architect Viljem Rihard, while the German heritage project Danube Places names the architect Oskar Pakvor and the builder Philipp Schmidt, so the attribution should be treated as unsettled. Construction is usually dated from 1929 to 1931.
