Forced Labor Servicemen at the River Harbor, Novi Sad, 1941
Men wearing yellow armbands stand near a Hungarian State Railways freight wagon and a pontoon dock, one man in a white uniform standing nearby. Petrovaradin Fortress rises on the hill across the river, its ramparts and long barracks building visible above the slope. The donor's caption identifies the men as forced labor servicemen at the river harbor.
About this place
The Novi Sad bank of the Danube, the embankment walk between the bridges. It is where the town meets its river: steamers tied up along it, the ferry and later the pontoon crossing landed on it, and it is the vantage point for most photographs looking across to the Petrovaradin cliff. Today the embankment carries more than one name along its length, Beogradski kej and Kej zrtava racije among them, and this entry holds the general name for the whole walk.
