Barges and railway wagons on the Novi Sad quay
A sepia postcard looking across the Danube at the Novi Sad shore. Along the foot of the bank, barges with cranes and loading gear lie moored side by side, and above them a line of railway goods wagons stands on a siding beside low sheds. Behind the quay the roofs of the town rise to a skyline with the tall Gothic Revival spire of the Roman Catholic Name of Mary church at left of centre, a smaller tower at far left, and a second spire beside a large pale building at right, with a leafy tree against the sky in the middle. The caption reads Нови Сад - Novi Sad and Панорама - Panorama. On the reverse a 50 stamp of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes is cancelled with a circular postmark whose year reads 29, and a line of small type forbids copying, so the card was in the post in 1929.
About this place
The Novi Sad bank of the Danube, the embankment walk between the bridges. It is where the town meets its river: steamers tied up along it, the ferry and later the pontoon crossing landed on it, and it is the vantage point for most photographs looking across to the Petrovaradin cliff. Today the embankment carries more than one name along its length, Beogradski kej and Kej zrtava racije among them, and this entry holds the general name for the whole walk.
