Officers Pavilion in Petrovaradin
A moonlight card of the officers' pavilion, its sky worked dark over the roofline. A message runs across the picture side in German cursive rather than on the back, which is the undivided-back convention given up in 1905. The caption is set in Hungarian and German, placing the card under Austro-Hungarian administration.
About this place
The Officers' Pavilion stands in the Podgrađe, the lower town of the Petrovaradin fortress, close to the Belgrade Gate. It was put up at the end of the nineteenth century as quarters for garrison officers, on an L-shaped plan of two wings: one follows the building line of Beogradska street, the other runs parallel to the curtain wall and faces the open ground before the gate. Above a basement there are a ground floor and two upper storeys, with staircases in courtyard annexes and three flats to a floor. The street fronts are designed in the historicist manner of the period, symmetrical, with the corner where the two wings meet given the strongest treatment.
