About this place
Petőfi utca was a street on the southern edge of Novi Sad, in Grbavica, named for the poet Sándor Petőfi. This archive's captions identify it with the present Ulica Lasla Gala, the stretch near Post Office 2 and the Liman market, which is the ground where the town's first railway station stood from 1882 until the line was moved north. The Hotel Orient, which this archive keeps as a subject of its own, stands at the head of the street in one of the two photographs, so the street and the hotel are the same corner seen twice. One of the cards prints the name of the town in three languages side by side, Ujvidék, Нови Сад and Neusatz.
