Almaška Street looking north to the Church of the Holy Three Hierarchs, whose baroque tower closes the view. The roadway is unpaved and lined with wooden posts, and the crowd is in summer dress: women in long skirts and wide hats, men in bowlers and straw boaters, with a uniformed man at the right-hand kerb. The street runs through Almaški kraj, the old Serbian quarter north-east of the centre, which grew around this church from the middle of the eighteenth century.
About this place
The Church of the Holy Three Hierarchs, known as the Almaska church, is the parish church of Almaski kraj, the old Serbian quarter north-east of the centre of Novi Sad. A wooden church stood here from the middle of the eighteenth century, built by settlers from the village of Almas; the present baroque building went up between 1797 and 1808 and was rebuilt after the bombardment of 1849. Its tall bell tower closes the view along several streets of the quarter.
