A long two storey corner building of the later nineteenth century stands where two streets meet, with round headed windows on the ground floor, pedimented windows above and young trees along one front, and a few men stand on the pavement near the corner. At the right edge the frame cuts off a dark signboard on the next house after FOGOR, which begins the Hungarian word for a dentist. The card is captioned Róm. kath. főgymnasium and Ujvidék, the imprint of the Novi Sad postcard publisher Ágoston Herger runs up the left edge, and a handwritten message in Hungarian fills the foot of the card, opening Édes Bátyám, dear brother, and asking him to send something if he still has it. The town put up the building in 1876 for its Hungarian Catholic grammar school, opened in 1873, which later moved to a new building begun in Futoška street in 1912.

About this place
The house at Kossuth Lajos utca 43, on the corner of Örmény utca, Armenian Street, was the earlier home of the Royal Hungarian Catholic grammar school, near the Armenian church. After the Hungarian school law of 1868 the town's Catholics campaigned for a gymnasium; the crown granted it in January 1873, and it opened on 4 October 1873 with four classes. The town magistrate put up its school building in 1876 from the municipal education fund, and by 1877 it had eight classes, 13 teachers and 181 pupils. A new building for it was begun at Futoška 17 in 1912, and advertisements from 1914 call the corner house the old grammar school. It also housed a court, and when it was pulled down, as the boulevard was driven through the old town under the plan of 1950, it held the Vojvodina Museum. The Bazar department store, designed in 1972 by Milan Mihelič, stands on its site. This archive's postcards show its long front, with the Armenian church tower beyond.
