1919–1941Hotel Queen Mary
The Queen Mary Hotel's Shopfronts, with a Tram and Motor Cars
An electric tram waits at a stop on a shop-lined street as two closed-cabin motor cars are parked at the curb behind it. A horse cart, a bicycle, and market vendors with goods spread on the ground share the roadway further down. A sender has added Ujvidék in ink at the top of the card. The publisher's own address is given as Novisad rather than Ujvidék.
About this place
The Queen Mary was a single storey hotel built in the classicist manner, with a summer garden that the archive photographed in 1935. This archive's catalogue records that it went up in 1854 for its owner Johann Eigler and first traded under the name Elisabeth, and that it was renamed the Queen Mary Hotel on 9 May 1922, after Marija, consort of King Aleksandar I of Yugoslavia. That change of sign is the ordinary pattern in Novi Sad after 1918, when Habsburg names on streets, squares and businesses gave way to those of the new royal house. Nothing further about the building has been traced beyond the archive's own record.
