1956-1969Danube Quay
Football by the river, the fortress beyond
Boys play football on a bare sandy pitch, a clipped hedge and bare trees behind them. Beyond the quay a large paddle steamer lies moored, two funnelled and two decked. Across the water Petrovaradin Fortress fills the skyline with its clock tower at the left, and lettering is painted along the fortress wall.
About this place
The Novi Sad bank of the Danube, the embankment walk between the bridges. It is where the town meets its river: steamers tied up along it, the ferry and later the pontoon crossing landed on it, and it is the vantage point for most photographs looking across to the Petrovaradin cliff. Today the embankment carries more than one name along its length, Beogradski kej and Kej zrtava racije among them, and this entry holds the general name for the whole walk.
