Waiting at the Danube Dock Below the Ruined Bridge, 1941
Civilians wait on a wooden pontoon dock, women in headscarves and hats among them, a girl in white knee socks, and a soldier standing further back. Behind them, a damaged lattice span of the railway bridge leans at an angle. A man in a suit stands apart at the dock's edge, looking out over the water.
About this place
The Novi Sad bank of the Danube, the embankment walk between the bridges. It is where the town meets its river: steamers tied up along it, the ferry and later the pontoon crossing landed on it, and it is the vantage point for most photographs looking across to the Petrovaradin cliff. Today the embankment carries more than one name along its length, Beogradski kej and Kej zrtava racije among them, and this entry holds the general name for the whole walk.
