The Steamer Felszabadulas Moored at Novi Sad, 1965
The paddle steamer Felszabadulas is moored at the Danube quay in Novi Sad, its name and the M.H.R.T. anchor emblem painted on the paddle box. Passengers crowd the upper deck rail while officers and a woman in a light coat stand at the gangway, which reaches down to a small crowd, including children, waiting on the shore. The Bridge of Marshal Tito is visible in the distance at the left.
About this place
The Novi Sad bank of the Danube, the embankment walk between the bridges. It is where the town meets its river: steamers tied up along it, the ferry and later the pontoon crossing landed on it, and it is the vantage point for most photographs looking across to the Petrovaradin cliff. Today the embankment carries more than one name along its length, Beogradski kej and Kej zrtava racije among them, and this entry holds the general name for the whole walk.
On the card
FELSZABADULÁS | M.H.R.T.
The paddle steamer's name, Felszabadulas, meaning liberation, in raised letters across the paddle box. Above it an oval device with the monogram M.H.R.T. over a fouled anchor.
