A Couple on the Half-Built Danube Quay, Novi Sad, 1965
A man in sunglasses and a woman in a dark coat stand on the newly paved Danube embankment in Novi Sad, with a tracked bulldozer grading the unfinished ground above the retaining wall behind them. An apartment block and older houses stand further back across a construction site still being leveled.
About this place
The Novi Sad bank of the Danube, the embankment walk between the bridges. It is where the town meets its river: steamers tied up along it, the ferry and later the pontoon crossing landed on it, and it is the vantage point for most photographs looking across to the Petrovaradin cliff. Today the embankment carries more than one name along its length, Beogradski kej and Kej zrtava racije among them, and this entry holds the general name for the whole walk.
